The Thirty-Nine Steps is an old-fashioned tale of the good guys against the bad guys and except for a few instances where the hero doesn’t quite know himself, there is no mistaking who is on the side of right and who is on the side threatening everything that is good, pure and British. This exciting action-adventure story was the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock’s 1939 classic film of the same name. The man, Scudder, an American, tells Hannay an incredible story: there is a general conspiracy aimed at overthrowing the old order. Richard Hannay’s boredom is soon relieved when the resourceful engineer is caught up in a web of secret codes, spies, and murder on the eve of WWI.
